Support a new senior center

April 19, 2018 |

There has been a lot of discussion about the Longmeadow Senior Center for several years with many options being opposed. Finally, we have a proposal and a design to replace the existing Senior Center in Greenwood Park with a new and expanded facility at the same location.  There is significant support for this new design.  I will not go into a lot of detail about the new facility since others have provided detailed information but will mention that it will provide for the significant growth of the senior population, provide privacy for several of the departments which do not have that currently, will provide for a major expansion of the gym which can be used by seniors and also by our youth in the off hours, and much much more.

Have you been to the Senior Center lately?  It is a very busy place and our 4,500 seniors look forward to being there and participating in its many programs.  And it will get busier as another 2,500 citizens become seniors in the next 10 years.

Why am I writing this letter?  I have always felt that there needs to be balance of our facilities, our efforts and our budget in Longmeadow.  Over the years our town, seniors and our younger population together, has managed to provide major new facilities in our school system, recreational and sports facilities for our youth, a new DPW facility and others for the benefit of our town.  Support for our seniors needs to be a part of this equation.  I know that those same citizens, who supported our other projects, will rise to the occasion and fully support the new Senior Center.

On May 8, go to the Town Meeting and vote for the new center and show our town and all the towns surrounding Longmeadow that we all support our seniors and want them to stay in town and be participating and productive citizens.
