Surprised at pay

Feb. 8, 2018 |

I never would have guessed that a casino would pay so little. I do not advise my kids on spending $1,000 in education to acquire skills to earn $5 per hour. Tips? The information from most people I have spoken to are that tips are overstated by the employers.  In some cases government will tax people on tips they have not received.  The agents know that low wage people do not have high priced attorneys to fight back.  The owner might have to pay the difference if the tips do not add up to a minimum wage.  While the establishment offering the training has its $1,000 there is no guarantee for the worker, especially if he flunks his CORI check for some trivial reason.

It is a poor investment.

Who gets the $300 license fee?  What training to do they have? What are their qualifications?  Most likely political connections. There are licenses for better occupations.

It a poor strategy for a person to bring himself out of poverty. So what if MGM does not get enough local people to fill the jobs?  Other desperate people will come.  Since the pay is so little they will qualify for various subsidies for the working poor. In effect the taxpayer will be subsidizing the casino if he never plays one game of poker.

Who says government cannot keep a secret?   I do not think many people knew that the pay would be so poor.
