Too soon to talk new middle school

May 12, 2016 |

The Hampden Wilbraham Regional School Committee members should be thanked for volunteering their time and talent to improve educational opportunities for our children. It is an important, and all too often, thankless task.

However, it is this writer's opinion school committee members are spending too much time on issues other than regionalizing middle school students. It’s premature to discuss building a new middle school when voters have not approved middle school regionalization. The school age population shrinks almost every year and the trend line is downward for the foreseeable future. How many empty schools does Wilbraham really need? One might say the cart is being put before the horse.

Let me close the way I started by thanking the school committee members for volunteering. If you want the school committee to stay focused on regionalizing middle school students instead and wait until after voters in both towns cast their ballots on the issue, then I would appreciate your vote on Saturday, May 21, 2016.
