Volunteer for meals on wheels

March 11, 2020 |

Meals On Wheels is one of the most important and utilized services provided by Pleasant View Senior Center in East Longmeadow. The Center delivers an average of 50 home-delivered meals every weekday to elders in East Longmeadow.

The importance of this program is much broader than its primary purpose of providing healthy meals to homebound elders. Not only does it provide proper nutrition, but the social contact of a volunteer hand-delivering the meal gives the senior social interaction which has enormous, positive health benefits.

Health risks that occur from social isolation are similar to that of obesity and smoking. For most, this is the only social interaction they have throughout an entire day. These interactions also act as a wellness check on behalf of the center to ensure that the senior is safe and not in need of any medical attention or other services.

If there are concerns, the volunteer will report such to the center’s staff, who will then call emergency contacts, often family members and friends, to make them aware of the situation.

“Thank you so much for checking in” is a statement the center’s staff will often hear after contacting a family member or caregiver. The peace of mind that this program brings to the senior and their family is priceless.

The center is currently in need of Meals On Wheels volunteers who will help ensure our frailer elders receive a healthy meal delivered by a friendly face. A stipend is provided to help offset the cost of gas.If you are interested in making a difference in an elder’s life,  please contact Alicia Smith at 525-5436 ext. 1406.
