We are hometown news

We need a new senior center

April 12, 2018 |

There are over 4,509 senior residents in the Town of Longmeadow. Additionally, there are currently 2,666  people between the ages of 50 and 60.  The elder population will continue to grow.

The current Senior Center is housed in woefully inadequate space in one half of one wing of an old elementary school and shares the space with the Town day care and summer camp programs.

The space is comprised of seven rooms. One room is dedicated to staff offices, one room is occupied by the Maple Tree Gift Shop, a third room is the dining room and a forth room is shared by the Public Health Nurse and the Veteran’s Agent, leaving just three rooms for Center programs. Due to the close quarters, there is no privacy afforded people when meeting with the Outreach Coordinator, Nurse or Veterans Agent.

As more of our seniors are living longer lives and wanting to age in place, it becomes necessary for communities to help provide opportunities for exercise options, intellectual stimulation, socialization and nutritional help.  A new Senior Center would allow the flexible space to provide suitable programs to meet these quality of life issues.

The design of the proposed Center includes a regulation sized gymnasium that is integral to planned  programs for the elders.  The gym would be available during off hours for Park and Rec. activities and the Adult Center building could be used for other town and community committees, boards and organizations.

Please vote yes for the new Senior Center. You will want to use it sooner than you think.
