Will banning straws help?

Sept. 5, 2018 |

We are now on a campaign to eliminate plastic straws from all places that serve drinks in containers.  Will this really solve the problem?  Granted we will eliminate billions of plastic straws and, perhaps replace some of them with paper ones.  If this is the only change, we will now have tons of paper straws for landfill, which I assume will biodegrade, instead of tons of plastic straws that will not.  How remarkable!

What if instead we started a campaign that everyone be responsible for disposing their plastic straws properly in trash that will eventually be burned. What if we also ask them to dispose their plastic cups, their beverage bottles and cans, their foam containers, their pizza boxes, their spare tires and everything else that they now dump out of their car windows, which they now toss out while taking a stroll, which they toss into rivers and lakes, which they dump onto empty lots at night when they can’t be seen and dozens of other places.

Right now we have many people who are very sloppy or they don’t care what they do with their trash or they are malicious and dump their trash in public on purpose.  If all we do is change plastic straws to paper ones, our litter problem will continue forever.  We must make everyone responsible for all their trash.

You have heard the statement that guns don’t kill people, people kill people.  Well, how about straws don’t litter, people litter.
