FC Massachusetts announces open registration for fall tryouts

Aug. 28, 2013
AMHERST – FC Massachusetts, a regional premier soccer club based out of western Massachusetts, recently announced open registration for a year-long mentoring and training program provided by a partnership with the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass) and the Girls Can Club.

Girls ages seven through twelve are eligible to register for the Girls Can Club that includes workshops, skills training and the unique opportunity to be mentored by a current UMass women’s soccer player. Additionally, all registered participants will receive a season pass to the UMass regular season home games and a club t-shirt. The UMass Girls Can Club registration is limited to 100 girls with a schedule of events beginning in September and concluding in April 2014.

“This is a great opportunity for girls to develop their mental game along with their physical game,” said the University of Massachusetts Head Coach, Ed Matz. “The workshops teach girls about optimism and being your best, which has a positive impact both on and off of the soccer field.”

The Girls Can Club is currently offered at the University of Massachusetts, the University of Maryland, George Mason University, and the University of Richmond Virginia, where creator Skye Bruce was an assistant soccer coach in the late 1990’s. Unlike other skills-based soccer camps and clubs, this program unites young girls with collegiate women’s soccer players in a group mentoring environment. Each woman from a participating team is a mentor to a small group of young girls, usually three to five, during the course of a year. Events include formal workshops and less formal opportunities for the mentor and mentees to connect such as eating in the dining hall, going to another sporting event on campus, touring the dorms, post-game socials, pre-game events, a soccer clinic and much more.

“Every young girl deserves to feel confident, strong and capable,” said Girls Can Club creator Skye Bruce, “and the relationships built through the Girls Can Club program show girls how.”
