EAST LONGMEADOW – While the East Longmeadow Lions Club has had to post–pone many of their events in the community, including the annual fishing derby which was set to take place over the past weekend but canceled due to COVID–19, the Lions Club is finding other ways to keep their presence in the community strong while showing support for others.

President of the East Longmeadow Lions Club Donna Martinez explained that a few weeks ago one of the members of the club called and asked what she thought about lighting the East Longmeadow town Christmas tree in support of first responders and frontliners who are working during the pandemic. Martinez stated she brought the idea to the board, and “everyone was in total agreement.”

The club had leftover materials from an ornament contest that they hosted a few years back, and members of the club turned the materials into hearts that they painted and put up next to the tree that spells out the words, “Thank You.”

Martinez stated that there have been many positive comments on Facebook, “It was all positive, everyone’s very happy that we did that. A lot of our club members have been getting comments from people – it’s just something nice to do.”

In addition to the hearts and tree, the club took a banner that they had previously which read, “We serve for all the world to see,” and changed it to, “They serve for all the world to see.”

She noted that the tree will stay lit for as long as it needs to be. “It’s a little way to show our appreciation to everyone who is still out working,” she said.
