The Western Massachusetts Golf Hall of Fame will induct five new members to its class of 2023 during an Aug. 30 ceremony at the Ranch Golf Club, 65 Sunnyside Rd.

Hall of Fame events for the day include a 1:30 p.m. shotgun followed by an evening dinner inside the icon barns on the Sunnyside Rd. property.

Tickets for a four-person scramble and induction dinner are available for $130.

For those who only want to attend the dinner, those tickets are $50.

Readers can contact Olivia at olivia@theranchgolfclub.com or in The Ranch Golf Club pro shop at 413-569-9333 to reserve golfing and dinner spots.

The Hall of Fame was founded in 2007 by Robert Bontempo, Jay Nomakeo and E.J. Altobello.

The Hall of Fame have inducted 63 people during its first 10 years.

This year’s ceremony will be its first since 2016.

Co-chair of the event Tom DiRico said, “We had a good selection of candidates and we felt it was time to bring back the hall of fame to get these people inducted. We choose people based on what they have done for the game of golf on a local level and also on an international level. We have some great inductees this year.”

Bontempo added, “It’ll be great to see the honorees at The Ranch, and we know it will be a wonderful day of golf and dinner for them and everyone who participates.”

Inductees are PGA of America professional Dan DiRico, golf course superintendent Paul Jamrog, amateur golfer Dean Godek, golf course owner and ambassador Pete Clark and golf writer Russ Held.

Dan DiRico is a member of the PGA of America who was a pro shop fixture at Franconia and Veterans golf courses in Springfield, as well as Hampden and Springfield country clubs.

He is a six-time Greater Hartford Open qualifier and five-time Western Massachusetts Chapter PGA Championship winner. He currently helps lead the Connecticut Section PGA Junior Golf Program.

Dan DiRico said, “First of all, you feel honored to be selected by your own peers. Bobby Bontempo and my brother Tommy DiRico has been PGA golf pros a little longer than I have. This is the first class that is going in after the coronavirus pandemic. You feel honored to be chosen.”

Godek is an amateur golfer who has eight USGA Championship appearances including a trip to the third round of the U.S. Amateur.

He was champion of the Massachusetts Four-Ball, reached the semifinals of the state amateur and has enjoyed success in state father/daughter and father/son competition.

“I think it is a great honor to be selected by your peers. You play golf to enjoy the game and the sport and I had some pretty good accolades,” Godek said.

He added, “The competition is great. I grew up playing hockey so when you get out of high school and college and you don’t play anymore, you don’t have that same competition or at the highest level whereas golf you can go all the all the way up to the USGA event and still be competitive.”

Clark is the owner and co-founder of The Ranch Golf Club, which has hosted numerous state, regional and national-level championships.

Clark said, “Very privileged because of all the people in this area who have done so much for golf. I feel honored. I am more of a sports guy but my love of golf came when I was introduced to this project and we were able to build something on a bare piece of farmland and create what a wonderful facility we have today.”

Clark’s golf resume also includes charity work with the Jimmy Fund/Cancer tournament.

Held was the golf writer at The Republican and MassLive.com for 25 years.

He has also freelanced for national golf publications and was also co-host of a handful golf talk radio shows in Springfield.

He said, “It feels great to be included with some of the most impactful people who have helped grow the game of golf in Western Massachusetts. As a writer, I had the opportunity to share with readers what everyone else had done to promote golf. Along the way, I was able to share so many memorable experiences with golfers in the area.”

Jamrog is a groundskeeper in New England and currently the superintendent at Metacomet Golf Club in East Providence, Rhode Island.

He left his mark in the region during his 15 years at Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley, particularly the course conditions at the 1987 U.S. Girls’ Junior won by Michelle McGann.

Tom DiRico said, “These are high profile golf courses where they select a top notch superintendent to represent their club.”
