MONSON – The Monson Select Board invited several board and committee chairs to provide an update on what they have been working on during their Sept. 27 meeting.

Craig Sweitzer, chair of the Planning Board, shared that they are currently working on a review of three zoning bylaws. The first is off street parking, as he said this is “kind of cumbersome” and doesn’t seem to be complete. The second is home occupations, because this has been “tricky to enforce and keep track of,” he noted. The third one is the enforcement byline. Sweitzer said they are trying to make it more “streamlined” for the bylaws to be enforced easier.

From the Council on Aging, Executive Director Lori Stacy and Chair Lisa Hamill explained their recent efforts. Hamill noted that she has only been the chairperson for one month – after the previous chair stepped down – and an active member for a couple of months. “We do have a really active group,” she said. “We get a lot accomplished.”

While Hamill does not have a lot of experience in the position, she shared that she looks to Stacy for guidance and to make sure that all standards are met.

Next, David Beaudoin, chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals, suggested that the town hire a full-time zoning enforcement officer. “Any one of us can drive anywhere in this town and see violations [of bylaws] all along. If you’re going to have any bylaws, you have to have them respected and adhered to and I don’t think we have that right now,” said Beaudoin.

Changing hats, Beaudoin also serves on the Cemetery Commission. He shared that a project they have been working on for some time is the arch at Hillside Cemetery on the corner of Main and Mill streets. Beaudoin explained that half of the arch is complete, however, they are looking to complete the remaining half with new masons. As this prolonged project has been pushed down the road for a few years, Beaudoin said they would like to complete this promptly – ideally before winter.

Lastly, Larisa Krutov, Board of Health chair, informed the Select Board that they have a new administrative assistant who has been a “really big help” over the past couple of months.

She went on to say that their biggest project right now is the roll out with Republic Services. Tentatively, Nov. 1 is the date that Monson residents should start receiving new trash and recycling barrels. Krutov noted that the Board of Health plans to host a question-and-answer session for residents, with Republic Services, in the coming weeks. More information on when the meeting will take place can be found on their official website at https://www.monson-ma.gov/board-health.

The next Monson Select Board meeting is set to take place on Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.
