AMHERST — The Second Annual Senior Health Fair takes over the large activity room at the Bangs Community Center on Tuesday, Oct. 17 from 2-4 p.m.

Senior Services Director Hayley Bolton said the timing of the event is no accident.

“We love doing it in October because that’s the start of open enrollment for Medicare,” she said.

Local providers will be at the center to answer questions from community members and help them take solid steps towards a better lifestyle.

A group of organizations are partnering with the town as part of the fair.

“Sometimes we see names in the newspaper or in a flyer but we don’t always appreciate just how many providers there are and the whole range of services that are available,” Bolton said. “We’re trying to put it all in one place.”

In addition to regular providers like Health New England, Mass General Brigham/Cooley Dickinson and the MA Behavioral Health Help Line, there will be counselors on hand from the Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone, program, also known as SHINE, to answer questions about Medicare enrollment.

Hearing testing and hearing aid cleaning services will also be part of the fair as is simply letting the community know that assistance is available and where to find it.

“Knowing where to go for resources and knowing that the Senior Center can help facilitate all of that,” Bolton said.

The Amherst Fire Department will be on hand to offer CPR demonstrations.

Bolton said this year’s fair is bigger and better than last year’s event.

“We’ve scaled up,” Bolton said. “Last year we didn’t have quite so many vendors but this year we have a lot of new faces.”

The fair, which is geared towards seniors, caregivers and those who support older adults will feature light refreshments and interactive programs. Those seeking information on behavioral health programs are also encouraged to attend.
