HARDWICK – During the Hardwick Board of Selectmen meeting on Aug. 8, the board voted to approve municipal funding for a mattress collection container.

Town Administrator Nicole Parker read a letter from Gov. Charlie Baker. The letter was addressed to Kelly Kemp, board member, reading, “Congratulations. I am pleased to notify you that the town of Hardwick has been awarded a Sustainable Materials Recovery Program Grant for a mattress collection container in the amount of $10,000.”

Baker continued, “I want to thank you for your commitment to reducing waste and increasing recycling for the benefit of our communities and the environment.”

Parker explained that the best container Kemp found is still under $10,000. “They’re going to be able to generate revenue by taking in mattresses from people,” she added.

Julie Quink, chair, noted that this option is better than leaving a mattress on the side of the street.

Town Administrator Report

Parker shared that the town is back on track with the sewer project. Although there have been a few minor hiccups, she said they are continuing to move forward.

Regarding the open space and recreation plan, Parker noted that they want to update the plan in hopes of obtaining park grants. “The Parks and Recreation Committee would like to get some granting going so they can put equipment at Gilbertville Park.”
